Engagi Lodge is one of the luxury lodges that are found in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park in the Buhoma sector. The sector is a home to 5 habituated mountain gorillas namely the Rushegura gorilla family, Katwe gorilla family, Muyambi gorilla family, Habinyanja gorilla family, and Mubare gorilla family. Engagi lodge has a total of eight en-suite cottages that are built using local materials from the rocks, eucalyptus trees, and thatched using grass. The cottages have private verandas offering stunning views over the forest canopy. Clients at engage lodge can walk around the load, do birding exercises, visit the Batwa and trek mountain gorillas. The lodge can be accessed by air and road transport at any time of the year.
Getting to engage loge in Buhoma sector
Travelers can access Engagi logde in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi by road transport from Kampala/Entebbe to Kabale to Buhoma sector taking only 9-10 hours. Those coming from Kigali can access Engagi lodge using Katuna birder in Kabale which takes 4-5 hours. By air transport, travelers to engage lodge can fly from Entebbe international airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to the Kihihi airstrip which is located a few minutes’ drives from the lodge.

Encounter mountain gorillas of the Buhoma sector
The most done activity done by people having a stay at Engagi lodge in Buhoma Bwindi is mountain gorilla trekking. The activity allows people to be with mountain gorillas for a maximum of 1 hour only if they have got a gorilla trekking permit. Travelers staying at engage lodge will be expected to wake up early in the morning and join fellow trackers at the sector quarters for a briefing about the mountain gorillas trekking. In groups not exceeding 8, trekkers will be led by ranger guides to search for mountain gorillas that are in the Buhoma region, and during the search, they have opportunities of seeing different park animals, birds, and plants. On locating mountain gorillas, the trekkers will be given an opportunity to be around mountain gorillas for a maximum of 1 hour while learning about their habits, watching them do daily activities, and taking photos.
To trek mountain gorillas in Buhoma from Engagi lodge, you will need a valid gorilla trekking permit from Uganda Wildlife Authority or a trusted tour operator at a fee of $700 foreign non-residents, $600 foreign residents, and shs250,000 East African citizens. Children below the age of 15 years are not allowed to trek and those with signs of transmittable diseases such as flu, and cough won’t be allowed to trek.

Travelers having a stay at engage lodge can decide to have a nature walk around the lodge or around the park in their free time. The nature walks can be done by booking with the park or lodge authorities who will get you an UWA ranger guide to lead you around the forest. The nature walks can be done at any time of the day and they take you through different forest trails with opportunities of seeing different park animals, birds, swamps, rivers, and plant species.
Culture experience
While at engage lodge, you can decide to organize a Batwa cultural experience during your free time. The Batwa experience takes you to Batwa people who used to live in the forests of Bwindi before the government evicted them out to protect the remaining species of mountain gorillas, other wild animals, and different tree species in the park. A cultural visit to the Batwa is led by the community people themselves who lead you through different parts of the park showing you which plant species they used as local herbs, how they used sticks to make fires, bows, and arrows to kill animals, how they used to collect honey and gather fruits. You will go further to their communities and see how they live in their grass thatched houses, their way of dressing, their local food and at the end, they will entertain you through traditional dances and drama.
