How many gorilla permits are in the Ugandan market per day? Get ready to pay about $700 per person per trek. Uganda is home to almost half of the remained mountain gorillas on earth, the prime destinations where one can go for trekking in Uganda are Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park. Both national parks are situated in the southwestern parts of the country along the Albertine Rift. Therefore, these two destinations can also be called the Bwindi-Mgahinga conservation area.

However, Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is too big with over 331 square kilometers and divided into four gorilla tracking spots which include; Buhoma sector in the north, both Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors in the south part of the park plus the Ruhija sector in the East. Each sector has gorilla families which are already for tourism every day and they offer a different experience.

Mgahinga national park is known as the smallest national park in Uganda and its big part stretches to the Virunga conservation area. It is among the three national parks that make up Virunga conservation areas, while others are Virunga national park of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Volcanoes national park of Rwanda.

Mgahinga national park is one of the few remained natural habitat for mountain gorillas with only one habituated gorilla family called Nyakagezi. It consists of 10 members which are already trekking each day. Only 8 tourists are allowed to trek Nyakagezi gorilla family per day.

One to trek any gorilla family in Uganda should have a gorilla permit which allows he/them to interact with the endangered mountain gorillas. The gorilla trekking permits of Uganda are in high demand, hence you should try as much as possible to book your permit in advance. The Bwindi impenetrable forest holds half of the few remained mountain gorillas in the world with over 500 primates. The park has 19 habituated gorilla families that can be tracked every day. This means that there is the availability of 144 gorilla permits per day in all Bwindi sectors on the other hand Mgahinga gorilla national park has only one habituated gorilla family which is open for tourists, hence there is the availability of 8 permits in this park each day. Gorilla habituation is the process of making gorillas familiar to people in their presence. This process is one of the best ways to conserve gorillas. These primates are naturally wild creatures and they can’t feel comfortable with any strangers in their presence include humans. To visit them, they need to be used to humans near them. Gorilla habituation takes like 3 years and is done by primate researchers while observing gorillas behavior. This process helps to win the gorilla’s trust so that they can allow people in their presence whenever they choose to. When this process is complete, the habituated group can be open for gorilla trekking or to tourists. Dian Fossey is one of the researchers who discovered many ways of making gorillas familiar to humans in their midst. One of the ways she discovered is that to be allowed by a gorilla family, you have to first win the trust of the silverback. So when he’s okay with everything, the other members just follow him.

A permit for gorilla habituation experience goes at 1500USD per person per trek and only 4 tourists are allowed to participate in this experience per day with the help of researchers and park rangers. Is it possible to reschedule a gorilla permit?

Yes, it is, you can reschedule your gorilla permit at any available date. But the late reschedule is 7 days from the start of the trip. You can also change gorilla permit information like another gorilla sector or a different data.

The possibility of seeing mountain gorillas in 4 destinations is 98%. The rules of nature are the reason why we cannot say that is 100%. But after getting a gorilla permit expect to see the gorillas.

What does the gorilla permit entail?

To access most national parks in Uganda, one is required to pay entrance fees to access the park, but if you paid for a gorilla trekking permit. Therefore, after paying a gorilla trekking permit, you shall not pay entrances fees in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park as well as in Mghinga gorilla national park. A gorilla permit in Bwindi forest also includes the ranger and security fees which you are assured of while in Bwindi forest.

You must have a gorilla permit. Gorilla trekking and habituation in Bwindi forest is possible to do in 1 day mostly when you are flying to Bwindi impenetrable forest national park or having a Bwindi gorilla safari from Kigali. So a tourist needs to deal with, meals, accommodation, and transport.
