Looking for the list of Habituated gorilla families in Uganda? Not only in Africa but the entire world there are only three gorilla destinations and these includes Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. But Uganda is one with biggest number of mountain gorillas which are over 550 individuals. These unique apes are inhabited in the impenetrable forest of Bwindi national park. This amazing tropical rain forest is positioned in the southern western part of Uganda and protects almost a half of the few remaining mountain gorillas, this park offers the most gorilla trekking experience than other mountain gorilla destinations in the whole continent. Mountain gorilla trekking is the key attraction in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park with a total number of over 19 gorilla families that are sighted from all the four sectors of Bwindi Forest.

Mgahinga gorilla national park is also a natural habitat where one can go for trekking mountain gorilla, in the southern western parts of Uganda is where this park found. It has one gorilla family which is open for trekking each day and it is visited by only 8 peoples. So, this means every day, there are 8 gorilla permits available at Uganda Wildlife Authority for mountain gorilla trekking.

Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is too big so it is divided into four trailheads and these includes Rushaga and Nkuringo in the South, Ruhija in the East plus Buhoma in the North parts of the park. Below is a list of habituated mountain gorilla families in Uganda based in Bwindi forest national park and mgahinga gorilla national park;

Mubare gorilla family

Mubare gorilla family is the first gorilla group to be habituated in Bwindi Forest, it has 5 individuals that heads by Kanyonyi is a dominant silverback gorilla family with 1 infant, 2 sub-adult females, and 1 adult female.

Habinyanja Gorilla family.

This is one of the habituated gorilla families in Uganda located in Buhoma sector and started n 1997 but this gorilla family was habituated and opened for trekking in 1999. The family has 13 members and these includes Maraya, Binyonko, Makara, Kisho, Elas, Hakato, Nabukye, Rwansigazi, Gacyaro, Rugyendi, Hamusini,Bangenyi, Nyamuhango. It is headed by a dorminat silveback known as Makara.

Rushegura gorilla family

It was opened for trekking in 2000. Rushegura family split from the Habinyanja gorilla family. with 19 members and headed by Mwirima, Kabukojo the black back, 5 infant gorillas that is Kyirinvi, Katabazi, Buzinza,Kibade and Nyamunmwa, 5 juveniles are Kafuruka, Karungyi,Nyampazi, kibande and Kanywanyi, 5 adult female that is Kibande, Kyirinvi, Karungyi,Nyamunwa and Buzinza and 2 sub-adult female are Ruterana and Kalembezi.

Nkuringo gorilla family

Nkuringo gorilla family was formed with 17 members but due to conflicts some of them split from this park and remain with 12 gorilla members which include 2 infants, 3 juveniles, 2 sub-adults, 2 adult females, and 1 silverback.

Bikingi gorilla family

Binkingi gorilla family was opened in 2012 with 15 family members including 1 silverback, 5 adult females, 4 infants, 2 juveniles, and 2 sub-adults. Though it is still undergoing through habituation process so it has no leader. 

Bushaho gorilla family

There are 8 individual members in this family with 1 silverback, 3 adult females, 1 infant, 1 juvenile, 1 sub-adult, 1 black back.  Bushaho gorilla family was formed by some members who split from the Nkuringo gorilla family and it was headed by a silverback Bahati. 

Nshongi gorilla family

This amazing gorilla family has 7 members which lead headed by Bweza a powerful silverback. Others are 1 silverback, 3 adult females,1 infant, and 1 juvenile.

Mishaya gorilla family

It has 12 members headed by a dominant silverback known as Mishaya. This gorilla family was opened for tourism in 2010 by Mishaya who spilt away from Nshongi gorilla family.

Kahungye gorilla family

It involves of 17 members lead by a dominate silverback Rumaz others are 2 infants, 3 juvenile, 3 sub-adults, 3 silverbacks, and 3 adult females.

Busingye gorilla family

The family has 9 members who divided from Kahungye gorilla family and it is headed by a dominant silverback known as Busingye.

Bweza gorilla family

This gorilla family has 23 members lead by a silverback known as Kakono , it has 2 infants, 1 sub-adult, 3 adult females, 4 blackbacks, and 2 silverbacks.

Kyaguliro gorilla family

This family was formed with 20 members, mainly for research this is the reason why it is not frequently used for tourism. it is divided into 2 gorilla groups that is Kyaguliro A and Kyaguliro B, this was due to the death of a leader.

Kyaguliro A has 10 members which includes a dominate silverback Rukara, 3 adult females, 2 infants, 2 juveniles, 2 black backs.

Kyaguliro B also consist of 10 family members which is under the leadership of Mukiza a dominant silverback with 4 infants, 1 adult, 4 adult females.

Bitukura gorilla family

It was created in 2007 with 24 family members but because of the conflicts some members were run away and remain with 14 family members which include 4 silverbacks, 4 adult famales. 1 baby, 3 infants, 2 juveniles.

Oruzogo gorilla family

It comprises of 17 members include 3 sub-adult males Musenene, Muhumuza and Nyabirano, 6 adult females which includes Mukwano, Nyangaro, Mutesi, Katoto, Nyakina, and Ruchura, silverbacks are Kaganga, Bakwate Kasumali, 3 infant that is Paska, Mufuruki, Musana, and it was opened for tourism in 2007.

Nyakagezi gorilla family.

This is the only gorilla family in Mgahinga Gorilla national park with 9 members whose names are silverbacks are Mathew, Mafia, an adult female Nyuramwiza, Nshuti, a juvenile Nkanda and an infant Mutagamba. Nyakagezi gorilla family sometime used to cross over to the neighboring countries that is Rwanda and Congo.  It was opened for tourism in 2012
