Mahogany Springs Lodge is a luxury lodge situated at the forestage of Buhoma on the northern side of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park. This lodge can be used by travelers who want to visit the Buhoma region or the Ruhija region of the park. The Mahogany Springs Lodge is one of the best lodges where you can have a comfortable stay while on a safari in Bwindi. The lodge can be accessed by either road or air transport at any time of the year.

Getting to mahogany springs lodge

Travelers can get to mahogany lodge by road transport or air transport. By road transport, the journey can start from Kampala to Kabale taking 8-9 hours. the journey is quite long but it gives travelers a beautiful view of the countryside, rivers, swamps, hills, and smiling people nit forgetting a stopover at the equator. Travelers from Rwanda can access the lodge using Katuna border in Kabale which takes 4-5 hours. You can also access Buhoma and Ruhija by air transport and that is from Entebbe international airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to Kihihi airstrip of Bwindi taking a few hours. From the airstrip, the lodge is located a few kilometers and a driver-guide will be ready to pick you up. Aerolink Uganda organizes flying safaris to Bwindi national park every day in the morning and evening.

Activities to engage in while having a stay at Mahogany Springs Lodge

Gorilla trekking

Mountain gorilla trekking is the main activity done by travelers staying at Mahogany Springs Lodge. The lodge is located near Buhoma and Ruhija sector of the park which means travelers can do gorilla trekking in any of the sectors. Gorilla trekking in Buhoma or Ruhija sector of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park simply meaning search mountain gorillas and be around them for 1 hour. To trek these endangered primate species, you will need to have a valid gorilla trekking permit issued out by the Uganda Wildlife Authority a body in charge of tourism. The gorilla trekking permits for these sectors cost 700 for foreign non-residents, $600 foreign residents, and shs250,000 citizens of East Africa.

Travelers having a stay at Mahogany Springs Lodge will be required to wake up early in the morning to catch up with other trekkers at the briefing point. At the sectors offices, the trekkers will be briefed by ranger guides about the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking activity after which grouping will be done according to age and physical fitness. The ranger guides thereafter lead different groups into the jungle to search for the assigned mountain gorilla families. Using different trails of the sectors, the trekkers get opportunities of meeting different park animals such as baboons, duikers, elephants, golden cats, giant forest hogs, buffaloes, birds, swamps, and plant species. After several hours of searching and meeting the assigned mountain gorilla family, the trekkers are given 1 hour to be around these beautiful gentle primates, watch them do daily activities like hunting, feeding, breastfeeding, as you learn about their habits and take photos.

Encounter birds at Mahogany Springs Lodge

Nature walks at Mahogany Springs Lodge Buhoma

Visit the Batwa pygmies

Visiting the Batwa pygmies is one of the things that travelers staying at Mahogany Springs Lodge can do in their free time. The Batwa people live around Bwindi impenetrable forest since they were evicted out of the forest by the government to protect the mountain gorillas and the forest. The Batwa people themselves will lead you around the different trails of the park while showing you different plants they used as local medicine, illustrating how they used sticks to make fires, how they used bows and arrows to make fires among others. The Batwa cultural visits also enable you to get entertained by the Batwa people who perform different traditional dances and drama and by all this you have appreciated their culture and supported their living. You can go further and visit the craft shops where you can buy souvenirs to take back home.
