Reasons for trekking Ruhija Gorillas in Bwindi impenetrable Forest

Ruhija is one of the four sectors in the eastern part Bwindi impenetrable forest national park used during trekking mountain gorillas in Uganda. Mountain gorillas are the key factor that attracts most of the travelers in this sector. The Bwindi impenetrable forest is made up of 4 sectors and Ruhija is among them others are Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south and in the north there is the Buhoma sector. Ruhija sector is home to four gorilla families which includes the Kyaguliro gorilla family with 7 members, the Bitukura gorilla family with 12 members, the Mukiza gorilla family with 13 members, and the Oruzogo gorilla family with 15 members, they all open for tourism. It is the only sector in Bwindi with the gorilla family which is used for research.  The sector has 32 gorilla permits are available and each gorilla family is visited by only 8 people per day at the same time.

How to access the Ruhija sector.

Ruhija sector can be reached from the capital Kampala via Kabale town for about 8-9 hours’ drive. Tourists are recommended to use a 4×4 vehicle due to its muddy and bumpy.

You can access this sector from Kigali-Rwanda through Kabale for like 3-4 hours’ drive.

If you do not want to take long hours in the way, can use a flight but there are no direct flights to Ruhija. One can fly from Entebbe international airport to the Kihihi airstrip and then transport from here for just 2 hours to the Ruhija sector.
