Mgahinga national park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park are the only national parks in Uganda where mountain gorillas do live. These two national parks have attracted thousands of tourists from all over the world who come to spend some time with the mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking is the main activity in these national parks and the total time taken to be with these mountain gorillas is 1 hour for those with gorilla trekking permits and 4 hours for those with gorilla habituation permits.

The trekking of mountain gorillas in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and Mgahinga national park can be done at any time of the year as the parks can be accessed by road transport and air transport. Over 20 habituated mountain gorilla families are in Uganda and 18 of these are open for trekking, while 2 are open for gorilla trekking by all people aged 15 years and above.

How much are gorilla permits in Mgahinga national park and Bwindi impenetrable forest national park?

Gorilla permits are cards issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority allowing people to look for mountain gorillas and be around them for either 1 hour or 4 hours. These permits are the same price in all the gorilla national parks, and the gorilla trekking permits go for $700 for foreign non-residents, $600 for foreign residents, and Shs250,000 for citizens of East Africa. These permits allow people to be around mountain gorillas for 1 hour and include the park entrance fee and ranger guide fee but exclude transport and accommodation.

The habituation is not in Mgahinga national park, it is in Bwindi and in only 2 sectors (Rushaga and Nkuringo), among 2 gorilla families, Bushaho and Bikingi.
