Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge is one of the luxury lodges found within the Buhoma sector of Bwindi overlooking the ancient Bwindi impenetrable forest national park. The lodge is one of the places where you can have a comfortable stay on your gorilla trekking safari in Buhoma a sector of the famous Bwindi impenetrable forest national park. The lodge is built with a stunning view of the forest as it offers views of different park animals, birds, and the forest itself. The lodge has 9 Bandas that is well built with bathrobes, laptop space, and mosquito nets among others. They do have free parking, free breakfast, wifi, and do offer airport transportation. They have a restaurant with well-trained chefs that prepare local and international foods. Trek mountain gorillas in Buhoma

The most done activity done by travelers staying at volcanoes Bwindi lodge is mountain gorilla trekking. The trekking sector is Buhoma and this is home to over 5 habituated mountain gorilla family namely Mubare, Habinyanja, Katwe, Muyambi, and Rushengura. To trek these gorilla families you will require a gorilla trekking permit that is printed out by the Uganda wildlife authority. On the day of gorilla trekking, you will be required to wake up early in the morning and move to the briefing point where you will meet other trekkers and et the rangers brief you about the dos and don’ts of the gorilla trekking activity. After the briefing, the trekkers will be grouped and each group will be led by ranger guides into the jungle to look for the gorillas. During the search, you will be lucky to meet some of the park animals like the buffaloes, duikers, baboons, elephants, giant forest hogs, birds, and different tree species. Once you have found the mountain gorilla you have been looking for, you will be given 1 hour to be around the gorillas watching them do daily activities, learning their habits, and taking photos.

Encounter birds

Bird watching is one of the things you need to do while staying at volcanoes Bwindi lodge in the Buhoma region. The best birding spot in this area is Mubwindi swamp and some of the bird species you are likely to sport include Purple-breasted Sunbird, Grauer’s Warbler, Dusky Long-tailed Cuckoo, Grauer’s Rush Warbler, Collared Apalis, Montane Masked Apalis, Kivu Ground Thrush, Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher, Stripe-breasted Tit, Rwenzori Nightjar, Rwenzori Turaco, Rwenzori Batis, Wood Warbler, Handsome Francolin, Turner’s Eremomela, Green-headed Sunbird, Evergreen Warbler, Yellow-crested Helmet Shrike, Red-throated Alethe, Yellow-browed Camaroptera, Chestnut-throated Apalis, Rwenzori Batis, Buff-throated Apalis, Cassin’s Hawk-Eagle, African Pitta, Cabanis’s Greenbul, Cassin’s Honeybird, Hairy-breasted Barbet, Cardinal Woodpecker, Red-faced Woodland Warbler, Handsome Francolin, Chestnut Wattle-eye, Compact Weaver, Coppery Sunbird, Dark-backed Weaver, Dusky Crested Flycatcher, Dusky Tit, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Common Bulbul, and so many others.

Nature walk trails

Buhoma sector has well-established nature walk trails so travelers having a stay at volcanoes Bwindi walk can spare some time and do simple nature walks around the lodge or the forest. These nature walks are led by well-trained guides who know well the forest and animals so they will be the ones to take you around the National Park. The nature walks will give you an opportunity to see things in the forest like the rivers, swamps, different tree species, birds, and animals like the elephants, buffaloes, duikers, giant forest hogs, and baboons to mention but a few.

Community visits to the Batwa Pygmies

The Batwa people were the initial inhabitants of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park but the government evicted them out of the park to protect the endangered mountain gorillas that were getting to extinction. The Batwa people now live around the park and have slowly adapted to the way of living of other people. Batwa cultural visit is led by the Batwa who take travelers around the forests showing them how they used to survive in the forest, hunt small animals, collect honey, and use sticks to make fire. The cultural visit will take you to the local communities of the Batwa where you will get entertained through traditional dances and drama, you will see their way of dressing and you can go further to taste their local food. After the community visit, you can decide to buy gifts from the local shops and by doing this you are supporting these people and they are appreciating the park.

Can I get to Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge in one day?

Volcanoes Bwindi lodge can be accessed by both air transport and road transport. By road the lodge can be accessed from Kampala/Entebbe via Masaka-Mbarara-Kabale taking 9-10 hours. On your way to the lodge, you can have a stopover at the equator, a simple game drives through Lake Mburo, distant views of lakes, swamps, rivers, and you will go through smiling people. Guests from Kigali can access volcanoes Bwindi lodge by driving through the Katuna border in Kabale or Cyanika border in Kisoro. Travelers can also get to volcanoes Bwindi lodge using air transport from Kajjansi airstrip or Entebbe international airport to Kihihi airstrip in Bwindi and from there a driver guide can transport them to the lodge taking a few minutes.
