The sector alone is a home to 4 fully habituated gorilla families with each gorilla family led by a dominant silverback. The permits are 32 simply because only 8 people are allowed to trek a single mountain gorilla family on a daily basis. Ruhija sector is one of those places where a traveler can spend time with mountain gorillas only if they have valid documents. On the day of gorilla trekking in Ruhija, trekkers are expected to be at the briefing points very early in the morning in order to have a briefing from the park rangers. During the briefing, they are taught about the dos and don’ts of the gorilla trekking activity, grouped, and then given rangers to lead them into the jungle.

Searching through the different trails of the sector, the trekkers have opportunities of meeting different park animals such as elephants, duikers, forest hogs, buffaloes, monkeys, birds, and different plant species. Ruhija is open every day which means that tourists can visit this area at any time of the year. Although the sector can be visited at any time of the year, there are months that are better than the rest and these are the drier months. The drier months are the best for a visit in the Ruhija sector and these are June to September and December to February. During these dry months, the rainfall is little or not there at all, the vegetation in the park is thin, the trekking trails are dry and the roads leading to the park are passable.

Travelers can as well visit Ruhija sector for mountain gorilla trekking in the rainy season and they will have the benefits of huge discounts on accommodation facilities. The rainy months are October to November and March to May and are characterized by little or no rainfall, the vegetation is always thick giving unclear views of the park animals, the trekking trails are muddy and slippery and the roads leading to the park are impassable.

Travelers can get to Ruhija sector in just a single day. There are 2 ways of getting to the sector and the fastest one is air transport which is done by AeroLink Uganda and Fly Uganda. The flights start from Kajjansi airstrip or Entebbe international airport and head out to Kihihi airstrip in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park taking only 2 hours. From the airstrip, a safari guide will transfer you to the park or to the lodge in a few minutes.
